Solar Decathlon is the largest global university competition focused on energy management in homes. It takes place biennially and challenges collegiate teams who design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.

As a Sustaining Sponsor of the Solar Decathlon, Schneider Electric supplies the design and engineering services, as well as the electrical distribution equipment required to safely and reliably connect the solar village to the utility service for the duration of the event.  In addition, many of the competing homes feature Schneider Electric energy management products.

The event is open to the public free of charge. Visitors can tour the houses, gather ideas to use in their own homes, and learn how energy-saving equipment can help them save money.

                          The Solar Decathlon:

                          • educates participants and the public about cost-saving opportunities presented by clean-energy products
                          • demonstrates to the public the opportunities presented by cost-effective houses that combine energy-efficient construction and appliances with renewable energy systems which are available today
                          • provides participating students with unique training that prepares them to enter clean-energy workforce

United States Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 is held in Washington, D.C.

Schneider Electric donated the products and engineering services required to implement the microgrid solution during the event. The microgrid enables a safe and reliable electrical connection between the solar village and the utility service for the duration of the event. By utilizing the microgrid, teams competing in the event can power their homes, and excess energy is delivered to the electrical grid to be used by the greater Washington, D.C.

In addition, Schneider Electric has supplied an EV charging station to the US Department of Energy’s Smart Grid Exhibit. The station offers a green and economical transportation fuel option while helping to decrease energy waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
